People aren't the only ones losing their homes in this waning economy. Pets are, too. Money woes and the high rate of foreclosures are forcing some owners to give up or abandon their pets, which in turn is stretching the resources of local animal rescue groups.

As a result, the Ski Center, Lite 98 and the Sycamore Square Merchants' Association are teaming up for "Wish Upon a Paw" during Sycamore Square's annual open house on Friday, Nov. 21, from 5-9 p.m. Guests are invited to make a donation of money or pet supplies to help meet the critical needs of local animal rescue groups, including Richmond Hero, SOS Pen Pals, SomeBuddies and others.

During the kickoff event, Lite 98's Kat Simons will hold a live remote at Center Square (in the former RVSP location) to promote "Wish Upon a Paw." Representatives from animal rescue groups will be on-site to accept donations. The Ski Center will continue accepting donations at its shop in Sycamore Square through January.

Needed supplies include pet food, cat litter, housebreaking pads, fl eece blankets, towels, paper towels, beds, trash bags, bleach, laundry detergent with bleach, cat toys, metal dog crates, cat carriers, offi ce supplies and more.
